When I was a sophomore in high school, I registered for a substance abuse class. At that age, I did not realize that alcohol abuse in reality was a sub classification of drug abuse. While taking this class and learning more about drug and alcohol abuse and above all about alcohol side effects, I read a lot about Alcoholic Anonymous, their meetings, how their programs have twelve steps, and how successful the Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program has been for people all through the world. I also learned quite a bit about alcohol rehabilitation and the various alcohol rehab facilities that are normally available to people who engage in abusive drinking.

Damaging Outcomes That are Associated With Alcohol Dependency and Alcohol Abuse

Some of the dangerous outcomes associated with alcoholism and alcohol abuse that I learned about in this class unquestionably worried me. The ruined lives and abundant problems experienced by most alcohol dependent people made me feel like I never wanted to drink alcohol when I became old enough. In a word, I did not want to face the damage and destruction that alcohol dependent individuals almost always go through.

Ponder upon this for a moment. What fifteen-year-old teenager wants to face premature death due to his or her drinking behavior? What young person wants to become so out-of-control regarding his or her drinking that drinking alcohol becomes the object of one’s life? What adolescent wants to go to one of the local alcoholic rehabilitation centers to deal with alcohol-related problems before he or she becomes an adult?

What teenager wants to encounter alcohol withdrawals when he or she tries to quit drinking? Why would an individual engage in drinking to such an extent that it would cause difficulties in every area of his or her life? Drinking later in life after a person has a career, a family, and develops personal responsibilities makes sense. But why would a teenager want to sacrifice his or her education, employment, finances, and relationships for a life that centers on abusive drinking?

These issues were so important that I discussed some of them in class throughout the school year. What was totally astonishing to me was the number of students who essentially didn’t care about the damaging outcomes of irresponsible drinking that I talked about. It was almost as if they couldn’t be troubled with the facts and how these consequences can demolish their lives. For the first time in my life I started to comprehend a saying that my grandfather used to say to me all through my youth: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

It’s Important, Liberating, and Beneficial to Keep Away From the Unhealthy and Destructive End Results of Alcohol and Drug Abuse if You Want To Be Happy

And even at my young age, I also began to comprehend how important, beneficial, and enlivening it is to remove yourself from the unhealthy and damaging effects of alcohol and drug abuse if you want to amount to anything and be happy in life.

Jesse had a particularly difficult time maintaining a job. In truth, due to his lethargy and lack of incentive, he was out of a job far more often than he was in a job situation. And when he did get employment, he had a hard time getting to work on time, he characteristically received less than passing performance evaluations, and he called off sick so often that he regularly got fired three or four weeks after he began working. Not surprisingly, one of the outcomes of Jesse’s less than positive employment history was the fact that he was just about flat broke on a day-to-day basis.

In spite of Jesse’s deplorable work track record and financial mismanagement, on the other hand, by hook or by crook he managed to drink in an abusive and irresponsible manner on a day-to-day basis.

So it came as no big surprise when Jesse got arrested for a fourth DWI. When he went before the court, the judge explained to Jesse that his alcohol-related behavior was terrible and, consequently, he was going to sentence Jesse to serve five months in the local jail.

Time While Locked Up In Jail To Reflect On The Demoralizing Outcomes of Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking

During his time in jail, Jesse was expected to learn more about alcohol facts, about the harmful results of excessive and hazardous drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol counseling. The judge underlined the fact that unless Jesse receives professional alcohol treatment and discovers how to live an alcohol-free life, he will quite possibly be spending quite a bit of his time locked up.

Jesse articulated that he comprehended what the judge was uttering but he still stated that placement in the local jail was not the best ruling. The judge saw things from an entirely different perspective and proclaimed that it was his professional responsibility to keep alcohol dependent persons off the streets who drive under the influence and who get one or more DUIs. To substantiate this assertion, the magistrate outlined some revered, extensively researched alcohol statistics that underscored some of the damaging results that are associated with thoughtless drinking.

Even though Jesse comprehended that he drank heavily, he never believed that he was alcohol dependent. So it was a big surprise when Jesse began experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms just about seven-and-a-half after going to jail.

To deal with his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner, Jesse was transferred to a drug and alcohol treatment hospital for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the municipal jail. While locked up in the municipal jail Jesse got alcohol rehabilitation but because he got this treatment as something that was forced upon him, he neglected to take ownership of his hazardous and abusive drinking.

When his time in the local jail was finished, the magistrate without indecision announced to Jesse that he would be under stringent scrutiny and would be required to take random urine alcohol tests.

Jessie’s Excessive and Hazardous Drinking Prevents Him From Living in an Accountable and Mature Manner

After hearing how Jesse did not take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unenthusiastically followed the rehabilitation policy and procedures while in the city jail, the magistrate knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Jesse once again in court about his excessive drinking behavior. As the judge reflected on Jesse’s circumstance, he couldn’t help but think about how some people never figure things out and discover how to live in an accountable and productive manner.

Jesse had a particularly hard time maintaining a job. If truth be told, because of his languor and lack of drive, he was unemployed far more often than he was employed with a job. And when he did get employment, he had a particularly difficult time getting to work on time, he typically received less than acceptable performance appraisals, and he called off sick so consistently that he regularly got fired two or three weeks after he began working. Not surprisingly, one of the results of Jesse’s poor work history was the fact that he was almost totally broke on a day-to-day basis.

In spite of Jesse’s awful work track record and financial misconduct, conversely, one way or another he made it his business to drink in an irresponsible manner most of the time.

So it came as no big surprise when Jesse got a fifth DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate stated to Jesse that his alcohol-related behavior was shameful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Jesse to serve five months incarcerated in jail.

Time In The County Jail To Reflect On The Devastating Results of Hazardous Drinking

During his time while locked up in jail, Jesse was required to learn more about alcohol facts, about the unhealthy effects of abusive and irresponsible drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol counseling. The magistrate emphasized the fact that unless Jesse receives professional alcohol counseling and discovers how to live a life of sobriety, he will most likely be spending more than a short amount of time in the city jail.

Jesse articulated that he understood what the judge was declaring but he still thought that placement in the local jail was not the most productive punishment. The judge saw things from an entirely different orientation and declared that it was his professional duty to keep alcohol addicted people off the streets who drive under the influence and who receive multiple DWIs. To validate this perspective, the magistrate outlined some honored, comprehensively researched alcohol statistics that underscored some of the devastating results that are correlated with excessive and abusive drinking.

Although Jesse realized that he drank in an excessive manner, he never felt that he was an alcoholic. So it was quite a surprise when Jesse began having symptoms of alcohol withdrawal approximately four hours after getting locked up in the county jail.

To deal with his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe and sound manner, Jesse was life flighted to a drug and alcohol treatment hospital for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the local jail. While locked up in the local jail Jesse got alcohol therapy but due to the fact that he got this counseling as something that was mandated for him, he failed to take ownership of his hazardous drinking.

When his time in the local jail was completed, the judge forcefully told Jesse that he would be under stringent observation and would be required to take random breath alcohol tests.

Jessie’s Abusive and Hazardous Drinking Stops Him From Living in an Accountable and Productive Manner

After hearing how Jesse did not take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unenthusiastically followed the rehabilitation procedures while in the local jail, the magistrate knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Jesse once again in court about his irresponsible drinking behavior. As the magistrate thought about Jesse’s circumstance, he couldn’t help but think about how some people never use their brain and learn how to live in a mature and effective manner.

Merissa and Augie have been dating for five years. They met while taking the same social problems class at a small, countryside, Church affiliated liberal arts college located in the Eastern part of the U.S. While they were basically good buddies at first, they eventually began dating when they were in their third year of college.

Because both of them came from very old-fashioned backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time progressed, nevertheless, they started to go to more football bashes, happy hours, keg parties, and sorority and fraternity parties. Consequently, they progressively began to drink more the longer they dated.

Their Social Life Regularly Consisted of Going to Happy Hour With Their Friends, Going to Restaurants Three or Four Nights Per Week, Going to Parties With Their Friends, Going to Professional Sporting Events, and Going With Their Friends to the Local Saloon on the Weekends

After they graduated from college, they both got jobs in a large city that was approximately eighty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move into the same apartment with one another.

Since they were far removed from the college drinking scene, then again, their social life frequently consisted of going to parties with their friends, going to happy hour with their friends, going to restaurants three or four nights per week, going to professional sporting events, and going to the local pub with their pals on the weekends. To put it simply, Augie and Merissa began drinking in an irresponsible and excessive manner.

Now that were living with one another and beginning to get more earnest about their relationship, nevertheless, they started to think about having children, buying a house, getting married, and becoming more responsible.

With any important change in a person’s life there is regularly a trigger the particular change in question. For Merissa and Augie the notion of buying a new house and having children was this “vehicle for change.” Stated another way, for the first time in their lives, Augie and Merissa started to critically review their excessive and irresponsible drinking and the long term alcohol effects on their health.

How Would Their Excessive and Heavy Drinking Affect Their Ability to Have Children, Their Relationship With One Another, Their Mental Health, Their Finances, and Their Relationship With Their Parents?

Would their abusive drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending nearly all of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house? How responsible would they be if they had children and continued to drink at their current pace? How would they be able to face their parents and tell them about their long term goals, aspirations, and dreams while they still drank in an abusive and hazardous manner while having fun as they did when they were in college? What would their drinking behavior do to their relationship? How would their irresponsible drinking affect their mental health?

From a different perspective, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol withdrawal symptoms, they realized that their hazardous and abusive drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not close their eyes to any longer.

After Giving Their Situation Some Serious Thought, Merissa and Augie Finally Realized That Their Goals, Dreams, and Aspirations Would not be Completed if They Continued Their Hazardous Drinking

All of these queries clearly led to the same conclusion: Augie and Merissa needed to realize that they couldn’t continue their excessive and hazardous drinking if their goals, aspirations, and dreams were to be fulfilled.

Once they came to this conclusion, they alerted their drinking pals about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this moment forward so that they could start to realize their future aspirations, goals, and dreams.

Much to their astonishment, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been reappraising their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently centered around drinking. They also understood that they would have to change extensively if they were to become more accountable and show more forethought for their plans, their health, and for their careers in the next five or ten years.

After their conversation with their pals about their dreams, hopes, and plans, Augie and Merissa actually started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their buddies. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their abusive and excessive drinking and their relatively short and long-term plans, aspirations, and goals.

Augie and Merissa have been going out for four years. They met while taking the same human geography class at a medium size, rural, liberal arts college located in the Eastern part of the United States. While they were merely good pals at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their third year of college.

Due to the fact both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time progressed, however, they started to go to more happy hours, football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, and keg parties. Consequently, they slowly but surely began to drink more as time went by.

Their Social Life Typically Consisted of Going to Parties With Their Friends, Going to Professional Sporting Events, Going to Happy Hour With Their Friends, Going to Restaurants Three or Four Nights Per Week, and Going With Their Friends to the Local Tavern on the Weekends

After they graduated, they both got jobs in a small city that was about fifty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move in with each other.

Due to the fact they were far removed from the college drinking scene, nonetheless, their social life as a rule consisted of going to parties with their friends, going to restaurants three or four nights per week, going to professional sporting events, going to happy hour with their friends, and going to the local pub with their buddies on the weekends. Stated another way, Augie and Merissa started to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner.

Now that they were living in the same apartment with one another and starting to get more resolute about their relationship, nonetheless, they started thinking about becoming more responsible, buying a house, getting married, and having children.

With any pivotal modification in an individual’s life there is frequently something that causes the specific alteration in question. For Merissa and Augie the idea of buying a new house and having children was this “source of change.” In short, for the first time in their lives, Merissa and Augie began to critically review their irresponsible and excessive drinking and the long term effects of alcohol on their health.

How Would Their Drinking Behavior Affect Their Relationship With Their Parents, Their Mental Health, Their Relationship With One Another, Their Ability to Have Children, and Their Finances?

Would their abusive and irresponsible drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending almost all of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house? How accountable would they be if they had children and continued to drink in an irresponsible and excessive manner? How would they be able to face their parents and tell them about their long term hopes, dreams, and plans while they still drank in an irresponsible and excessive manner while having fun as they did when they were in college? What would their hazardous and abusive drinking do to their relationship? How would their irresponsible and heavy drinking affect their mental health?

From a different line of reasoning, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol withdrawal symptoms, they realized that their abusive and irresponsible drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not overlook any longer.

After Giving Their Circumstances Some Serious Thought, Merissa and Augie Finally Realized That Their Plans, Dreams, and Hopes Would not be Attained if They Continued Their Heavy and Abusive Drinking

All of these queries unmistakably indicated the same conclusion: Augie and Merissa needed to realize that they couldn’t continue their drinking behavior if their aspirations, hopes, and dreams were to be made real.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they notified their drinking pals about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this time forward so that they could start to realize their future aspirations, dreams, and hopes.

Amazingly, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been reexamining their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often focused on drinking. They also thought that they would have to change extensively if they were to become more responsible and exhibit more thoughtfulness for their careers, their goals, and for their health in the next twenty or twenty-five years.

After their heart-to-heart chat with their buddies about their hopes, dreams, and plans, Merissa and Augie in effect started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar perspective regarding their abusive drinking and their relatively short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.

When I was in the tenth grade in high school, I took a drug abuse class. At that age, I did not comprehend that alcohol abuse in truth was a sub classification of drug abuse. While taking this class and learning more about drug and alcohol abuse, I read a lot about Alcoholic Anonymous, their meetings, how their programs have twelve steps, and how successful the Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program has been for people throughout the world. I also learned quite a bit about alcohol rehabilitation and the different alcohol rehab clinics that are habitually available to individuals who engage in heavy drinking.

Some of the harmful consequences related to alcoholism and alcohol abuse that I learned about in this class certainly alarmed me. The ruined lives and countless difficulties experienced by most alcoholics made me feel like I never wanted to drink alcohol when I became old enough. Stated differently, I did not want to face the damage and destruction that alcohol addicted individuals almost always go through.

Think about this for a moment. What fifteen-year-old individual wants to face premature death due to his or her drinking behavior? What adolescent wants to become so out-of-control regarding his or her drinking that drinking alcohol becomes the object of one’s life? What young person wants to go to one of the local alcoholic rehabilitation centers to deal with alcohol-related issues before he or she becomes twenty-one?

What young person wants to experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms when he or she tries to stop drinking? Why would a person engage in drinking to such an extent that it would cause difficulties in every area of his or her life? Drinking later in life after an individual has a career, a family, and develops personal responsibilities makes sense. But why would an adolescent want to sacrifice his or her education, employment, finances, and relationships for a life that centers on excessive drinking?

These issues were so important that I talked about some of them in class during the school year. What was absolutely astonishing to me was the number of students who openly didn’t care about the detrimental consequences of excessive drinking that I talked about. It was almost as if they couldn’t care less about the truth and how these effects can destroy their lives. For the first time in my life I started to comprehend something that my grandfather used to articulate all through my adolesence: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t force it to drink.

Jennifer is a twenty-six-year-old court reporter who has been drinking in an excessive manner since her live-in boyfriend and she severed their relationship. In point of fact, for the past six months she has been drinking almost one-and-a-half bottles of wine every night, and on the weekends she also has been drinking a number shots all through the day.

After feeling down in the dumps because she was starting to close her eyes to her health, Jennifer finally told herself that she’s had enough, that it’s time to quit the self pity routine, that it’s time to stop the hazardous and excessive drinking, and time to get on with her life. So the next Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, she determined that she would quit drinking completely and suddenly without preparation or planning.

When She Attempted to Stop Drinking She Felt Sick, She Started to Perspire Profusely, Her Head Was Throbbing, She Had Absolutely No Appetite, She Was Extremely Anxious and Moody, and She Vomited Several Times

When Jennifer stopped drinking, she figured that she would quite possibly be tempted to sneak a couple of drinks, but she never figured that she would feel so sick. More directly, roughly an hour after she quit drinking, she had absolutely no appetite, her head was aching, she started to sweat extensively, she was extremely moody and restless, and she vomited a number of times.

When she called her best girlfriend and informed her that she had quit drinking and that after a couple of hours she without any warning started to experience flu-like symptoms, Olivia, her best friend, told Jennifer to call her healthcare practitioner and explain in a clear manner what was transpiring.

She Admits to Her Medical Practitioner That She Has Been Drinking In an Excessive and Hazardous Manner, That She Just Tried to Stop Drinking, and That She is Going Through Terribly Painful Flu-Like Symptoms

So Jennifer called her physician, informed him that she has been drinking excessively for more than a few months and that when she tried to totally quit drinking earlier in the day, within a few hours she felt as if she had the most terrible flu-like symptoms that she had ever gone through.

Her healthcare practitioner informed her that she may be going through alcohol withdrawal symptoms and that she should have a relative or friend drive her to the emergency room as soon as possible.

As soon as Jennifer got off the phone, she got a relative to drive her to the emergency room. Interestingly, as sick as Jennifer was, all she could think about all the way to the hospital was whether or not she might be addicted to alcohol.

Evidently her family doctor had phoned ahead and informed the emergency room personnel to expect Jennifer because when she got to the hospital, she was met by two nurses who without hesitation told her to get in the wheelchair they had with them. After getting moved to the emergency room and undergoing a few basic tests, it was verified that Jennifer was in actual fact going through alcohol withdrawal symptoms and was in need of alcohol detox.

A physician administered some medications to lessen the intensity of her flu-like symptoms and also administered some meds to help get rid of the alcohol that was still in her body.

An Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependency Medical Practitioner Clearly Explains That She is Dependent on Alcohol and Then Clearly Explains What Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms and Alcoholism Stages Are

After a few hours, Jennifer was taken from the ER and transported to the recovery room. After she was in recovery for around two-and-a-half hours, Doctor Jeffries, an alcohol addiction specialist, came to see her. He took his time and explained in a clear fashion that Jennifer had experienced alcohol withdrawal symptoms when she stopped drinking because she had become dependent on alcohol.

He then mentioned the fact that with excessive drinking on an everyday basis, the drinker’s brain slowly becomes accustomed to the alcohol so that it can operate in a “semi-normal” way. When the person then all of a sudden quits drinking alcohol, it can be stressed, the brain reacts by producing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Moreover, her medical practitioner also explained the various alcoholism stages that an alcoholic almost always goes through as the disease advances.

It is Verified that Jennifer is in the Earliest Stage of Alcoholism and She Receives a Good Forecast For a Total Recovery if She Gets the Alcohol Dependency Therapy She Needs

Fortunately for Jennifer, it was confirmed that she was in the earliest stage of alcohol addiction and, consequently, she was given a good forecast for a complete recovery if she receives the alcohol therapy she needs.

Jennifer told the doctor that she will do whatever it takes to get sober and to restore her health. She also mentioned that she has an excellent hospitalization insurance plan that will more likely than not pay for most, if not all, of the costs required for rehabilitation. It was clear to see that Jennifer was very thankful about her encouraging medical prognosis and felt free from anxiety knowing that she will be able to get the alcohol rehab she requires so that she can begin the road to recovery.

Miss Benning was a health teacher at the best known co-ed high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already gained a reputation as a person with instructional approaches that stimulated and inspired her pupils to learn and to think.

For instance, one Thursday morning at 10:30 she addressed her students and said the following: “For the next week we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism facts from a more wide-ranging point of view and we are also going to learn about several of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint.

Not all of these alcoholism signs will unquestionably reveal that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent individual, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the more likely it is that he or she is an individual who is alcohol dependent.”

Miss Benning then explained to the class that each individual would be responsible for studying two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class via a twenty minute oral presentation.

The Pupils are Wound Up About Giving A Detailed Presentation to Their Fellow Classmates About The Signs of Alcoholism

After learning about the various signs of alcohol addiction for several days, the time had finally come for the student presentations. It was immediately apparent that her students were enthused about the topic because the information that they presented was excellent. To say that Miss Benning was pleasantly surprised with the fervor exhibited by the pupils in her classroom regarding this topic was an understatement.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Benning passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Benning then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After roughly fifteen minutes, Miss Benning collected the pieces of paper and informed her pupils that after she reviews the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.

There was a real buzz by the pupils while they were exiting Miss Benning’s classroom. One could swear that her students couldn’t wait for the next day to arrive so that they could find out the outcome of their in-class research.

The Pupils Match Their Answers Against the Evaluations From A Council of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Authorities

When the next school day arrived, Miss Benning handed out a piece of paper that listed the top five alcohol addiction signs according to the students’ rankings. To the right of these results, she added another column that was labeled “experts’ response.” She then explained to her pupils that the numbers in the new column she added were the answers that were given by a group of alcohol addiction professionals.

Miss Benning asked the students in her class to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 20 or 30 seconds, almost everyone in the class raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the students had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the authorities. For instance, virtually every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranked answer given by the experts, that is to say, “Do you feel really ill when you refrain from drinking?”

The Central Difference Between Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependency is the Physical Dependency That is Experienced With Alcohol Dependency and Not With Alcohol Abuse

Miss Benning then told the students in her class why this answer was the most correct sign of alcoholism. She pointed out the fact that the principal difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Primarily this means that when an alcoholic abruptly stops drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Miss Benning then explained to the pupils in her classroom that alcohol withdrawal symptoms are responses by the brain and by the body to the deficit of alcohol to which they had become acclimated. Stated another way, alcohol withdrawal symptoms are signals from the brain and from the body telling an individual who is addicted to alcohol that something is dreadfully out of kilter and needs to be fixed. These signals consist of several painful, dangerous, and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can possibly lead to a person’s death if the proper therapy is not immediately obtained.

Miss Benning then went over the many different alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be experienced when an alcohol addicted person suddenly quits drinking.

The fact that Miss Benning tried to underline was this: a person who engages in alcohol abuse can experience almost any and every one of the alcohol addiction signs that the students had ranked, but the one sign or symptom that few, if any, alcohol abusers ever experience is alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

To articulate this as overtly as possible, Miss Benning pointed out that alcohol abusers, unlike alcohol addicted people, are not alcohol dependent and consequently, when they quit drinking, they almost never experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

The Pupils Feel They Have Found A Contradiction With the Findings From The Group of Alcoholism Experts

The pupils also some difficulty with the second ranked answer given by the alcoholism specialists, namely, “Have you ever had a drink the first thing in the morning to get rid of a hangover or to steady your nerves?”

Miss Benning explained to the students in her classroom that this sign does not inevitably denote that the problem is alcohol addiction, but that it does highlight the need that alcoholics have to drink in order to steer clear of alcohol withdrawals.

After Miss Benning explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to understand the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

To add a sense of closure to the subject, Miss Benning asked her pupils to take out a sheet of paper and answer the following question: “if every person who is alcohol dependent knew about every one of the alcohol withdrawal symptoms and alcoholism signs we have studied, what percentage of them do you think would get alcohol treatment?”

After approximately two or three minutes, Miss Benning asked for the pupils’ responses. While many students believed that approximately 70 to 80 percent of individuals who are addicted to alcohol would get alcohol rehabilitation if they knew about the facts related to alcohol dependency signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, most of the students reasoned that this number would not be less than 65 percent.

The Pupils Were Shocked to Learn That Only 25% of Alcohol Dependent Individuals in the United States Seek Alcohol Dependency Treatment

To the astonishment of most of the students, Miss Benning stated that according to different scientific investigations, only 25% of the individuals who are alcohol dependent in the U.S. ask for alcohol addiction treatment. This surprised most of the pupils because they believed that exposure to the awful statistics and facts linked to alcohol addiction would motivate most of the people who are alcohol dependent to seek alcohol dependency rehab.

Miss Benning then explained that people who are addicted to alcohol not only need alcohol everyday in order to function but they also need alcohol everyday so they can steer clear of possible alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Apparently, the alcohol addicted person’s need to drink on a daily basis is more powerful than logic or facts. Without a doubt, since the need for alcohol is “reality” to the alcohol dependent person, this is hard to counteract.

A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Benning realized that she had inspired and encouraged the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a critical health and social problem that exists in our culture.

Jennifer is a thirty-two-year-old court reporter who has been drinking in an excessive and hazardous manner since she and her fiancée severed their relationship. In truth, for the past eight months she has been drinking nearly one-and-a-half bottles of wine every night, and on the weekends she also has been drinking more than a few wine coolers throughout the day.

After feeling unhappy because she was starting to close her eyes to her health, Jennifer finally told herself that enough is enough, that it’s time to quit the self pity routine, that it’s time to stop the excessive drinking, and time to get going with her life. So the next Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, she determined that she would stop drinking completely and suddenly without planning or preparation.

When She Stopped Drinking She Felt Terrible, She Had Absolutely No Appetite, Her Head Was Aching, She Started to Sweat Extensively, She Was Extremely Moody and Restless, and She Vomited a Number of Times

When Jennifer quit drinking, she assumed that she would most likely be tempted to have a few drinks, but she never envisioned that she would feel so sick. More accurately, around two-and-a-half hours after she quit drinking, she started to sweat extensively, her head was pounding, she vomited a number of times, she was extremely moody and anxious, and she had utterly no appetite.

When she called her best buddy and informed her that she had quit drinking and that after a few hours she abruptly started to have flu-like symptoms, Eva, her best buddy, told Jennifer to call her doctor and tell him what she was experiencing.

She Admits to Her Medical Practitioner That She Has Been Drinking In an Excessive and Abusive Manner, That She Just Tried to Quit Drinking, and That She is Going Through Nasty Flu-Like Symptoms

So Jennifer called her medical practitioner, told him that she has been drinking in an irresponsible and excessive manner for several months and that when she made an effort to abruptly quit drinking earlier in the day, within a few hours she felt as if she had the worst case of the flu that she had ever gone through.

Her physician told her that she may be going through alcohol withdrawal symptoms and that she should have a neighbor or friend drive her to the emergency room as soon as possible.

As soon as Jennifer got off the phone, she got a relative to drive her to the hospital. Interestingly, all the way to the hospital, as sick as Jennifer felt, the only thing she could think about was whether or not she might be an alcoholic.

It seems that her doctor had phoned ahead and informed the emergency room personnel to expect Jennifer because when she got to the hospital, she was met by two emergency room employees who without hesitation asked her to lie down on the portable bed they had with them. After getting transported to the emergency room and undergoing two or three basic tests, it was confirmed that Jennifer was in point of fact suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms and was in need of alcohol detox.

A healthcare practitioner gave her some meds to reduce her flu-like symptoms and also gave her some drugs to help get rid of the alcohol that was still in her body.

A Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency Doctor Goes Over the Fact That She is an Alcoholic and Then Goes Over What Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms and Alcohol Addiction Stages Are

After two or three hours, Jennifer was removed from the ER and wheeled to the recovery room. After she was in recovery for around two hours, Doctor Carlson, an alcohol dependency specialist, came to visit her. He took quite a bit of time and explained in laymen’s language that Jennifer had experienced alcohol withdrawal symptoms when she quit drinking because she had become addicted to alcohol.

He then discussed the fact that with heavy drinking on a daily basis, the person’s brain slowly becomes accustomed to the alcohol in order to execute tasks and operations in a “semi-normal” manner. When the person then all at once quits ingesting alcohol, it can be stressed, the brain takes action by eliciting alcohol withdrawal symptoms. In addition, her doctor also discussed the various alcoholism stages that a person who is alcohol dependent usually suffers through as the disease advances.

It is Established that Jennifer is in the Earliest Stage of Alcoholism and She Receives a Good Diagnosis For a Total Recovery if She Gets the Alcoholism Therapy She Needs

Fortunately for Jennifer, it was determined that she was in the earliest stage of alcohol dependency and, as a consequence, she received a good projection for a complete recovery if she obtains the alcohol rehabilitation she needs.

Jennifer told the healthcare practitioner that she will do whatever it takes to get sober and to restore her life and her health. She also articulated that she has a first class hospitalization policy that will probably pay for most, if not all, of the costs needed for rehab. It was apparent that Jennifer was quite pleased with her positive prognosis and felt at peace knowing that she will be able to get the alcohol dependency treatment she requires so that she can begin the road to recovery.

Miss Benning was a health instructor at the most financially challenged private high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already established a reputation as an educator with instructional techniques that stimulated and motivated the students in her class to think and to learn.

For example, one Tuesday afternoon she addressed her pupils and stated the following: “For the next week we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism facts from a more wide-ranging viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint.

Not all of these alcoholism signs will categorically confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the stronger the possibility that he or she is an alcoholic.”

Miss Benning then told the class that each student would be responsible for researching three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other members in the class via a ten minute oral presentation.

The Students are Wound Up About Giving An In-Depth Presentation to Their Fellow Students About The Signs of Alcohol Dependency

After learning about the diverse signs of alcohol addiction for a number of days, the time had finally come for the individual presentations. It was instantaneously apparent that the pupils were excited about the subject matter because the material that they presented was first class. To say that Miss Benning was pleasantly surprised with the passion displayed by the students in her classroom regarding this subject was an understatement.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Benning passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Benning then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top ten alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately five minutes, Miss Benning collected the sheets of paper and informed her students that after she analyzes the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.

There was a real buzz by the pupils while they were walking out of Miss Benning’s classroom. One could swear that her students couldn’t wait for the next day to arrive so that they could learn about the results of their in-class research.

The Students Compare Their Answers With the Appraisals From A Group of Substance Abuse Experts

When the next school day came, Miss Benning gave out a sheet of paper that listed the top five alcoholism signs according to the pupils’ rankings. To the left of these results, she added another column that was labeled “correct response.” She then explained to the pupils in her classroom that the numbers in the second column she added were the findings that were constructed by a panel of chemical dependency authorities.

Miss Benning asked the students in her class to look over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, just about every student in the class raised her or his hand. It was clear to see that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the authorities. As an illustration, virtually every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranked answer given by the professionals, that is to say, “Do you feel very sick when you quit drinking?”

The Chief Difference Between Alcohol Addiction and Alcohol Abuse is the Physical Addiction That is Experienced With Alcohol Dependency and Not With Alcohol Abuse

Miss Benning then informed the students in her class why this answer was the most correct sign of alcohol addiction. She underscored the fact that the principal difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

In essence this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent suddenly quits drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Miss Benning then informed the students in her classroom that alcohol withdrawal symptoms are responses by the body and by the brain to the deficit of alcohol to which they had become accustomed. Stated another way, alcohol withdrawal symptoms are signals from the brain and from the body telling an alcoholic that something is extremely misaligned and needs to be fixed. These signals consist of several painful, dangerous, and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that can potentially lead to a fatality if the proper treatment is not promptly received.

Miss Benning then listed the many diverse alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be experienced when an alcohol addicted person abruptly stops drinking.

The fact that Miss Benning tried to underline was this: a person who engages in alcohol abuse can experience almost any and every one of the alcohol addiction signs that the students had ranked, but the one sign or symptom that few, if any, individuals who engage in alcohol abuse ever experience is alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

To articulate this as clearly as possible, Miss Benning stressed the point that alcohol abusers, unlike alcohol addicted people, are not alcohol dependent and as a consequence, when they stop drinking, they almost never suffer from alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

The Students Think They Have Discovered A Variance With the Findings From The Panel of Substance Abuse Specialists

The students also disagreed with the second ranked answer given by the substance abuse specialists, that is, “Have you ever had a drink the first thing in the morning to get rid of a hangover or to steady your nerves?”

Miss Benning explained to the pupils in her class that this sign does not necessarily suggest that the problem is alcohol addiction, but that it does emphasize the need that individuals who are alcohol dependent have to drink in order to steer clear of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

After Miss Benning explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to comprehend the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

To add a sense of closure to the subject matter, Miss Benning asked the students in her classroom to take out a sheet of paper and answer the following question: “if every person who is an alcoholic knew about every one of the alcohol dependency signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms we have studied, what percentage of them do you think would obtain alcohol addiction rehabilitation?”

After roughly four or five minutes, Miss Benning asked for the students’ responses. While many students reasoned that approximately 70 to 80 percent of alcoholics would obtain alcohol dependency treatment if they knew about the facts related to alcohol addiction signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, most of the students believed that this number would not be less than 55 percent.

The Students Were Astonished to Find Out That Only 25% of Alcohol Dependent People in the United States Ask For Alcohol Rehab

To the astonishment of most of the pupils, Miss Benning proclaimed that according to various scientific examinations, only 25% of the individuals who are addicted to alcohol in the United States obtain alcohol addiction rehab. This surprised most of the students because they reasoned that exposure to the devastating statistics and facts associated with alcoholism would motivate most of the alcohol dependent people to obtain alcoholism treatment.

Miss Benning then stated that alcohol dependent people not only need alcohol on a daily basis in order to function but they also need alcohol on a daily basis so they can prevent possible alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Obviously, the alcohol addicted person’s need to drink on a daily basis is more powerful than logic or facts. In actual fact, because the need for alcohol is “reality” to the alcoholic, this is a demanding issue that is difficult to overcome.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Benning knew that she had stimulated and inspired the students in her classroom to stop and think about an important health and social problem that exists in our country.
